Swami Atmasthananda Maharaj (1919–2017), the 15th President of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, was a monk whose life radiated selfless service, discipline, and compassion. A disciple of Swami Vijnanananda—a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna—he was born on Buddha Purnima (May 21, 1919) in Sabajpur near Dhaka. He joined the Ramakrishna Order in 1941 and embraced sannyasa in 1949.

He strengthened the Mission’s work in health, education, and rural upliftment, especially in Gujarat and Rajkot. His tenure in Rangoon (Myanmar) showcased remarkable courage and service under adversity. His serene presence and compassionate wisdom deeply touched countless souls.

Among those influenced by him was Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who regarded him as a spiritual mentor. Swamiji encouraged him to serve society through action rather than monastic life.

His life embodied the motto — “Atmano mokshartham jagat hitaya cha” — for one’s liberation and the welfare of the world. He attained Mahasamadhi on June 18, 2017, leaving behind an immortal legacy of love and service.
